Hansel womenswear blends a sense of quirky
playfulness with understated minimalism. Designer Jo Soh pulls together unexpected
elements, creating highly-wearable pieces that suit spunky, confident women
who can’t help standing out in a crowd. The label reflects her modern and
unique take on retro-inspired styles, featuring her signature love for juxtaposing
strong and subtle shades.
Hansel, named after her beloved Jack Russell Terrier (a stray pup she rescued
off the streets) made its impressive debut at the Mercedes Australian Fashion
Week in November 2003 at the highly anticipated New Generation show. Since
then, Hansel has garnered many accolades and won many fans. London-based online
trends watchdog WGSN.com described Jo as a “total original” while Patty Huntington
of The Sydney Morning Herald praised the label for being “ultra modern and
fresh”. During the Australian leg of their world tour, The Veronicas were
spotted wearing Hansel. Kiwi actress Emily Barclay, the star of Australian
feature film “Suburban Mayhem”, arrived at the movie’s screening at the 2006
Cannes Film Festival decked out in Hansel dress.
Jo’s designs have also captured the eye of industry critics who hail her as
rising star. Jo clinched the FRESH Designer Label of the Year at the prestigious
Singapore Fashion Awards 2004. The following year, she was celebrated as one
of Singapore’s top 20 designers during the country’s Design Festival. She
was nominated for Singaporean Designer of the Year at the inaugural ELLE Awards
2006, and has been nominated for the upcoming The Singapore Women’s Weekly
Great Women of Our Time Awards 2006, in the Design & Style category.
