A new Presidents Design Award to recognise and honour Singapores best designers and designs, was announced by Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts on 2 September 2005. The President will be the Patron of this national design award, which will be awarded on an annual basis. The Presidents Design Award is Singapores acknowledgement of good design in the fields of architecture and urban design, fashion design, industrial and product design, interior design and visual communications design. In recent years some Singapore designers have won international design accolades. Our local design-related associations have also presented annual design awards. But so far we do not have any nation-wide recognition for Singapore designers whose design achievements are both internationally-acclaimed and are of national significance. Hence MICA has initiated this award to confer national recognition for good designers. Dr Lee Boon Yang said The introduction of this national award for designers indicates that Singapores design industry has reached an important milestone. It signals that our design industry has already attained some measure of success and achievements. This Award will recognise the contribution of top designers in each sector. I hope that this Award will inspire, motivate and spur our designers to greater heights and enable our design industry to make greater contribution to the creative industries and the economy as a whole.E/FONT> Minister for National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan said: The Presidents Design Award for Architecture and Urban Design (A&UD) will be the most prestigious award of its kind for local architects and designers. It emphasises the value of good design, including architecture and urban design, recognises the significant achievements and contributions of Singapores design talents and is a clear signal of the level of support that Singapore accords to design and design practitioners. I believe this Award will drive the members of our architectural community to aspire to A&UD excellence, so important in developing Singapore into a vibrant global cityE
The disciplines to be awarded include Architecture and Urban Design, Fashion Design, Industrial and Product Design, Interior Design and Visual Communications Design. There will also be two merit-based categories:
In the discipline of architecture and urban design, the Award aims to promote design excellence and encourage high quality architecture and urban design projects to be built in Singapore so as to shape it into a distinctive global city. In parallel, the Award also recognises the increasing number of excellent works executed overseas by Singapore architects. Potential award candidates are selected from public nominations followed by assessment by an appointed jury of specialists. The eligibility criteria for the Presidents Design Award can be found at Annex A. More details of the Award, including a call for nominations, the award process, terms and provisions, will be announced during the inaugural Singapore Design Festival in November 2005.
