DesignSingapore Scholarship 2010
Objectives
The DesignSingapore Scholarship aims to groom design talents who have the creativity, drive and passion to develop Singapore into Asia’s leading hub for design excellence. The Scholarship is targeted at students and industry professionals who wish to pursue full-time undergraduate or postgraduate design-related courses at reputable institutions.
Scholarship Coverage
DesignSingapore Overseas Scholarship
The Overseas Scholarship covers tuition fees of up to S$40,000 per year, subject to a maximum of S$100,000. Scholars will be designated as DesignSingapore Associates upon the acceptance of the Scholarship.
The Scholarship has a two-year service commitment to Singapore. Upon completing their studies, the Scholars are required to work in Singapore in a design-related field for two years. Scholars need not start their service commitment immediately upon graduation, but can choose to do so over a five-year period. In addition, as DesignSingapore Associates, the Scholars will be required to contribute to projects undertaken by DesignSingapore Council, and/or contribute to their field of practice with an organization in the design industry. The Associateship will expire upon the fulfillment of the two-year service commitment after the Scholar graduate.
DesignSingapore Local Scholarship
The Local Scholarship covers tuition fees of up to S$10,000 per year, subject to a maximum of S$20,000. Scholars will be designated as DesignSingapore Associates upon the acceptance of the Scholarship.
As DesignSingapore Associates, scholars will be required to contribute to projects undertaken by DesignSingapore Council, and/or contribute to their field of practice with an organization in the design industry. The Associateship will expire one year after the Scholar graduate. There is no service commitment attached to the Local Scholarship.

Eligibility for Application
All Singapore citizens and permanent residents are welcomed to apply for the Scholarship. Applicants must have already gained admission into an institution for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate studies in an appropriate field. The letter of admission from the institution should be submitted together with the application. Male applicants must also have completed National Service.
Assessment Criteria
Eligible applicants will be assessed based on the following:
- Applicant’s creative and academic potential
- Applicant’s potential to become a leader in the design community
- Applicant’s achievements, track record and relevant experience
- Applicant’s passion for design
- Benefit and value of the studies to the applicant and to the development of the design industry in Singapore
- Other factors being equal, the financial background of the applicant
How to Apply
Applicants are requested to submit online applications for the Scholarship at the Creative Industries Scholarship website. Registration is required at the website before applicants can fill up and submit the online applications.
After applicants have submitted their online applications, they are required to submit the following materials at 5th Storey MICA Building, 140 Hill Street on 5, 6 or 7 April, 10am to 12noon or 2pm to 4pm:
- Printed copy of application form submitted online
- Certified true copy of relevant academic records and/or transcripts (including GCE 'O' Level results)
- Copy of letter of admission into proposed course of study and institution
- Printed copy of information on proposed course of study (if any)
- Printed copy of 1,000-word essay on personal interest in design
- Printed copy of curriculum vitae and/or record of activities (including participation in exhibitions, competitions and other design activities and awards received)
- Letters of recommendation from two referees (referees must not be immediate relatives of the applicant). Referees are requested to enclose the letter of recommendation in an envelope, seal and sign across the envelope seal before passing the sealed letter to the applicant for submission
- Printed copy of applicant's portfolio and/or samples of applicant’s works
- Other relevant supporting documents

Application Period
Applications for the 2010 Scholarship will close on 31 Mar 2010.
Selection Process
Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend up to two rounds of selection interviews in May/June. Applicants successfully awarded the Scholarship will be informed of the award in July. All successful applicants are required to attend a Scholarship Award Ceremony in late July/early August.
Note
The DesignSingapore Council reserves the right not to disclose the reasons for approving or rejecting any application and to reject any incomplete application.
