SingTel mobile subscriber base rose 45%

BT (pgs 2 & 7), CNA online (11 Aug), my paper (p B5) and 938live (11 Aug) reported that SingTel’s mobile subscriber base in the region jumped 45 per cent on-year to nearly 198 million as at June. The telco recorded strong subscriber growth from associates in India, the Philippines and Indonesia. In Singapore alone, SingTel added 182,000 new mobile customers in the quarter to bring its total mobile customer base to 2.75 million. BT noted SingTel’s increase was the largest among the three local telcos in the period marked by the introduction of true mobile number portability. StarHub had added 178,200 subscribers to bring its cellphone user base while M1 recorded the smallest customer gain of 57,000. Collectively, Singapore's handphone subscriptions have now swelled to 6.15 million, translating to a mobile penetration of 134.2 per cent.

NMS, ACM and SOTA receive generous book donations
CNA online. 11 August 2008
CNA online reported that Times Publishing Limited has donated more than 9,000 books to the reference libraries of NMS, ACM and SOTA. The report added that this is one of the largest such donations ever seen in Singapore. It comprises over 4,000 different titles sourced from publishers around the world and span a variety of topics including architecture, design and modern art. For its contribution, Times Publishing has been recognised as a Partner of Heritage by NHB.

 
 
Newton Suites - one of Top 5 Finalists of the International Highrise Awards 2008

Newton Suites by Singapore’s WOHA Designs has been selected as one of the 5 finalists of the International Highrise Awards 2008. This places a design project by a Singapore enterprise alongside another 4 international finalists, namely Foster & Partners (New York), Renzo Piano (New York), OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture – Beijing) and Mass Studies (Seoul). The finalists are top-notch, high profile international architectural firms. Sir Norman Foster (Foster & Partners), Rem Koolhaas (OMA) and Renzo Piano for instance, were winners of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which honours architects and is widely described as "architecture's most prestigious award" or "the Nobel of architecture." The 5 finalists are selected amongst 26 nominated highrise projects from 11 countries, and will compete for the award to be announced on 14 November 2008.

 
 
New School of Design and Media at ITE

ST (p H8) and ZB (p 2) reported that the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) will be launching a new School of Design and Media next year. It will be housed in ITE College Central and will offer programmes that allow students to design spacecraft, learn animation and study visual effects and motion graphics. The report carried SMS’ comments at the ITE graduation ceremony held at the National University of Singapore yesterday, “The new school will focus on programmes that will develop creative talents for Singapore’s design and media sectors.” SMS added that the courses will help ITE keep up with changes in the economy, offering students skills that will come in handy as the digital entertainment industry expands.
