Owners of local restaurant chain, The Soup Spoon, believe that design is an ingredient that can help take the company to the next level of business growth.
Mr Andrew Chan, co-founder and managing director, said design is not simply a “nice, beautifying project”, but about the space and how one communicates with one’s customers.
Over the 10 years since it was established, The Soup Spoon has made a series of changes that has helped it to improve the efficiency of its employees and in turn, raise customers’ satisfaction.
“We have internalized these (design concepts) and started to add them as part of an overall experience. More importantly, we use them as a form of communication with the consumer... Hopefully they change the way our customers live and eat,” said Mr Chan.
The Soup Spoon is a company that has benefitted from the workshops and seminars organised by the Design Thinking & Innovation Academy (DTIA). The Academy was established by the DesignSingapore Council in 2010 to infuse design thinking in the private and public sectors for productivity, competitiveness and sustainable growth.

Proud to "sell out"

Furniture designer Nathan Yong isn’t shy of “selling out”. He believes in creating furnishings that are visually appealing as well as functional. This is a spot-on business strategy as his furniture is always in demand.
Yong is the owner of retail store Grafunkt that made S$2.6 million last year. According to him, the three factors necessary to become a successful designer in Singapore are “patience, luck and strategy”.
Yong received the 2008 Designer of the Year award at the prestigious President’s Design Award (PDA) Singapore. Conferred by the President of Singapore and jointly administered by the DesignSingapore Council and Urban Redevelopment Authority, the PDA Award is given to recipients who demonstrate excellence in all design disciplines.

Multi disciplinary architectural firm SCDA Architects recently won three prestigious international awards. In June 2012, the Singapore-based firm was awarded the RIBA International Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects for the residential building One KL. Lanzavecchia + Wai is a creative collaboration between Francesca Lanzavecchia and Hunn Wai. Hunn Wai (pictured above right) received the 2005 DesignSingapore Scholarship and was an Overseas Promotion Partnership Programme recipient for his debut showing at the Milan Fair in 2010.

As part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the Academy of Saint Martins in the Fields and Central Saint Martins collaborated to create the intriguing Musical Torch installation. 2011 DesignSingapore Scholar, Kevin Yeo, who is currently pursuing his Master’s degree for Creative Practice in Narrative Environments in Central Saint Martins, London. Kevin worked together with his course mates Elisa Magnini, Alexander Schnell Srameh, Amy Wallace and Seung Youn Lee on the project.

Selene Chew won the Grand Prix at the Netexplo 2012 Awards for her design of a smart cane to help visually impaired individuals lead more active social lives. The win makes her ‘the first Singaporean to be nominated for the award and first Asian to win the top prize at the competition’, according to The Straits Times (17 March 2011).
