Award Categories

There are 2 categories for the President’s Design Award:

  1. Designer of the Year
  2. Awarded to individual(s) or design team(s) to recognise their design creativity and achievement(s) in any discipline, demonstrated by a sustained body or portfolio of works.

  3. Design of the Year
  4. Awarded to project(s) or product(s) in any discipline, to recognise their national significance and creative value to Singapore.

All design disciplines

All nominees must be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore1, and include those who have produced their designs overseas and/or who live overseas.

Design of the Year

Architecture and
Urban Design (A&UD)

Built-in-Singapore projects
Built projects which involve Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore2.  A&UD projects that involve foreign collaborators3 are also eligible for nomination.

Overseas projects
Built projects which involve Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore4. A&UD projects that involve foreign collaborators3 are also eligible for nomination.

All other design disciplines

Designs that are designed in Singapore
Regardless of place of execution and nationality of the lead designer for the design.

Designs that are designed overseas
Regardless of place of execution, but lead designers must be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore.

1 For submissions to the Architecture & Urban Design category, the architects must be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore who are licensed to practise in Singapore and/or overseas. 3 For the Architecture & Urban Design category, Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore can collaborate with foreigners and submit jointly as a design team.
2 For Architecture & Urban Design projects built in Singapore, the architects must be Singapore citizens or permanent residents of Singapore who are licensed to practise in Singapore. 4 For overseas Architecture & Urban Design projects, the architects must be Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore who are licensed to practise in Singapore and/or overseas.

Judging Criteria

1) Designer of the Year

All nominations for Designer of the Year will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  1. Attainment of design excellence;
  2. Professional maturity and design leadership in one or more disciplines;
  3. Imagination, insight and innovation displayed in works;
  4. Creative originality in design thinking, and in identifying and solving design problems;
  5. Impact of works on contemporary life and living environment;
  6. Extent to which works have expanded and challenged the conventions of different design disciplines; and
  7. Potential to inspire and be a role model for other designers in Singapore.

2) Design of the Year

All nominations for Design of the Year will be assessed according to the following criteria:
  1. Creativity and originality of design thinking;
  2. Execution and finish;
  3. Functionality and design strategy;
  4. Aesthetic sensibility and emotional appeal;
  5. Benefit to humanity;
  6. Sustainability; and
  7. National significance and iconic value to Singapore.

For Architecture and Urban Design (A&UD) projects, these additional criteria will apply:

  1. Exemplary urban design and relationship to surrounding context;
  2. Innovative design and construction quality; and
  3. Enhancement to social and environmental values that the design has brought about.
Please also note that:
  1. Only A&UD and interior design projects that are completed or scheduled to be completed ­ with their Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP, or equivalent for overseas projects) obtained between 9 August 1965 and 30 April 2008 ­ shall be eligible for the Award. Projects with unapproved use, illegal works or unresolved planning issues shall not qualify for the Award;
  2. Any existing completed A&UD and interior design project built in Singapore or overseas can be considered for shortlisting. For large-scale A&UD and interior design projects involving long-term planning and development, the first phase must be complete and operationally stable; and
  3. The A&UD and interior design submissions can be solo or joint projects which the designer is directly involved in as its author, with the endorsement of the owner, professional engineer, principal contractor and foreign collaborators (if any). For joint A&UD and interior design projects, members of the project team will also have to be acknowledged.
