The President’s Design Award is Singapore’s most prestigious award for its designers and designs. It recognises the significant achievements and contributions of the nation’s design talents. The spirit of the Award encourages design excellence that improves quality of life, enhances human potential and national competitiveness.
The President’s Design Award acknowledges that Singapore’s design industry has reached a key milestone by attaining significant achievements in all disciplines of design, including but not limited to architecture and urban design, exhibition design, interior design and landscape design, product and industrial design, visual communications and fashion design. It is awarded to individuals and designs that are pushing the boundaries of Singapore design, tangibly making a difference to the lives of Singaporeans and larger global communities.
Potential Award candidates are selected from public nominations followed by assessment by an appointed Jury of local and international specialists. Jointly administered by the DesignSingapore Council and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the Award has two categories:
- Designer of the Year; and
- Design of the Year
Recipients of the Award will receive a trophy and a certificate. Each recipient of the Designer of the Year Award is also eligible for the President’s Design Award Grant to undertake a community-based design project. All recipients of the President’s Design Award will be featured in the President’s Design Award exhibition and publication.
The Award was first launched by The President of the Republic of Singapore in November 2005, during which the Award trophy was unveiled as well. Nine recipients of the Award – two Designers of the Year and seven Designs of the Year – were selected for the inaugural awards in 2006.
The Award entered its second cycle in 2007. Last year, the Award was conferred on seven Designers of the Year and seven Designs of the Year.
