Press Release

Hiatus for Singapore Design Week in 2020

4 min read

Singapore, 8 August 2019 – The Singapore Design Week (SDW) will be taking a year’s hiatus in 2020, and will return in 2021.

Organised by the DesignSingapore Council (Dsg), the SDW was inaugurated in 2014 to showcase Singapore’s thought leadership in design, connect design talents and businesses, and engage the community through delightful activities that demonstrate the value of design. Its break in 2020 is an opportunity for Dsg to review the festival after a successful six-year run. However, Brainstorm Design, the SDW’s feature conference in the past two years, will continue in March 2020.

2       The SDW has enjoyed a close collaborative relationship with partners who have, over the years, brought us a robust line-up of programmes, such as Brainstorm Design, the International Furniture Fair Singapore, SingaPlural, Design Trails, and various district activations, to bring the value and impact of design on businesses, communities and individuals to the fore.

3       It is thus timely for the Dsg to assess how the festival can be improved to better meet the needs of stakeholders and audiences. With design being so intrinsic in all aspects of our lives, the SDW is a key platform through which audiences will gain a better understanding of how people’s lives can be improved; communities can be bridged; and businesses can create value, through the adoption and integration of design. The Dsg is also looking to sharpen the identity and unique selling proposition of the Singapore Design Brand through the SDW. This will enable a better positioning of the festival globally to attract more international participation in the SDW, and further engagement with Singapore, our local creatives and businesses.

About the Singapore Design Week

The Singapore Design Week (SDW) brings together a collection of local and international design activities in Singapore. The SDW is organised by the DesignSingapore Council, and is open to the design community, businesses, design students, public sector officers and the general public. As one of Asia’s premier design festivals, the SDW champions design thought leadership by bringing together the design, business and public policy worlds to bring about innovation and solutions to build businesses, engage communities and enrich people’s lives. It is a hub where the best design talents and businesses from Singapore and Asia converge to be showcased to the world; and a platform where Singaporeans and visitors can experience the value of design through delightful activities. Through the festival, the Dsg hopes to enhance the synergy among our design partners, and in turn boost Singapore’s profile and attractiveness as a global city for design. The SDW will take a hiatus in 2020 and return in 2021.
