Award Categories and Eligibility
There are two categories for the President's Design Award:

  1. Designer of the Year
Awarded to designer(s) or design team(s) to recognise their design creativity and achievement(s) in any design discipline, demonstrated by a sustained body or portfolio of works. There will be a move towards recognising multi-disciplinary designers in 2017/18.

  2. Design of the Year
Awarded to project(s) or product(s) according to impact area of design, to recognise their national significance and creative value to Singapore.

IMPACT AREAS OF DESIGN

The new approach for the award from 2017/18 sees more focus given to the impact of design. PDA will welcome projects of all disciplines in four broad impact areas, distilled from its founding objectives:

  1. Engendering economic transformation – Projects that transform businesses through innovative design strategies and processes, change management, innovative products, services and experiences, etc. An example could be: Bynd Artisan by &Larry (PDA Design of the Year 2016). This rebranding project resulted in the reskilling of elderly employees and new business opportunities for the company.
  2. Raising quality of life – Projects in, but not limited to, housing, healthcare, lifestyle, public spaces, public (or publicly-available) services, transport, education, etc. An example could be: The Pinnacle @ Duxton (PDA Design of the Year 2010) by Housing & Development Board, Arc Studio and RSP Architects, which created a new typology for public housing.
  3. Advancing Singapore brand and culture – Projects that deal with culture and heritage, social and community projects, branding/re-branding, social inclusivity, social bonding, etc. An example could be: Enabling Village by WOHA Architects (PDA Design of the Year 2016). This project re-envisioned and re-framed “disability” as “diverse abilities”.
  4. Making ground-breaking achievements in design – Making groundbreaking achievements in Singapore design: Projects that have pushed boundaries in crafts and technical excellence to achieve breakthroughs for the design industry.
