People at the Heart of the Design Process

The 11th year of Presidents Designs Award Recipients’ Forum 2016 was held on the 16th December 2016 at the National Design Centre, Level 2 Auditorium. The Award recognises Singapore’s design talents at the highest level, and the Recipients’ Forum is a platform for the latest crop of recipients to share their winning works and design stories with the public. This year’s Forum was organised in two sessions, featuring eight President Design Award recipients’ insights.

The afternoon session focused on recipients sharing their experiences based on user insights, ethnographic studies and extensive research. Designers shared stories of how designs are transformed today by putting their users at the core of the design process.

The session kicked off with the sharing of Designer of the Year, Dr Hossein Rezai, Director of Web Structures Pte Ltd on his design journey.

Followed by Phua Hong Wei, Associate ofWOHA Architects who spoke about the Enabling Village; a transformative community space centered around the needs of people with disabilities.

Bassam Jabry, Managin Director and Karin Aue, Design Director of Chemistry were also invited to tell the participants more about the co-creative process, conducted with doctors, nurses and social workers, that informed the UI design of Vscan Access.

Last but not least, Edwin Chin, Senior Industrial Designer of HP Inc Global Experience Design (Singapore Studio) and lead designer of the All-in-One-Printer office printer to address the common problems users face.

Attendees had the opportunity to direct their questions to a specific designer and participants walked away with the limited copy of the latest edition of the Singapore’s President Design Award 2016 publication!

The Recipients’ Forum 2016 was proudly co-organised by DesignSingapore Council and Urban Redevelopment Authority.
